Minors

The Department of Languages and Literature currently offers four minors: Creative Writing, English, Film, French, and Spanish.

**All English Majors are required to choose a concentration within the major. Any student not choosing a minor may choose one of the following:

English minor:
A minor in English requires the completion of 18 semester hours with a minimum grade of C in all courses in English, to include:

  • English 101 and 102
  • English 220
  • English 315 and 316 or English 321 and 322
  • At least nine semester hours of 300-level or above English electives

Creative Writing Minor:
A minor in Creative Writing requires the completion of 18 semester hours with a minimum grade of C in all courses in English, to include:

  • ENGL 265 or 266
  • ENGL 311
  • ENGL 312
  • ENGL 430 (may be repeated twice if content differs)
  • And at least six additional semester hours of 400-level ENGL literature or film electives.

 French Minor:
French students pursue their training through courses in civilization, stylistics, textual analysis, film and literature from the Middle Ages to the present. A minor in French requires the completion of 24 semester hours with a minimum grade of C in all courses in French to include:
  • FREN 101 & 102
  • FREN 201 & 202
  • FREN325 & 326
  • and 6 semester hours of French electives from courses numbered 300 or above.

Spanish Minor:
The Spanish minor offers students courses in language, culture and civilization. The program emphasizes intercultural communications with an emphasis on understanding culture through literature, history and language. A minor in Spanish requires the completion of 24 semester hours with a minimum grade of C in all courses in Spanish to include:

  • SPAN 101 & 102
  • SPAN 201 & 202
  • SPAN 312
  • SPAN 318
  • SPAN324
  • And 3 semester hours of a Spanish elective from courses numbered 300 or above.

Creative Writing Concentration (ENCW):

The concentration  in Creative Writing requires completion of 18 semester hours of credit with a minimum grade of C in all courses  to include:

  • ENGL 265                                  Concentration Elective Choices: (Choose 3 hours from any of the following)
  • ENGL 309                                  ENGL 330 (3), ENGL 331 (3), ENGL 332 (3), ENGL 333 (3), ENGL 358 (3)
  • ENGL 311                                   ENGL 432 (3)
  • ENGL 312
  • ENGL 430 (may be repeated twice if content differs)
  • And at least six additional semester hours of 400-level ENGL literature or film electives.

Film Studies Concentration (ENFS):
The minor in film studies is a great way to demonstrate your ability to study, analyze, understand, and write persuasively about visual texts.  It is a great addition to any major, particularly majors in the humanities and/or business.  The skills demonstrated from completing a minor in film studies are marketable in a wide array of fields ranging from business to education—not the least of which being jobs created in Southeast Louisiana by the new Hollywood South film industry. A minor in Film Studies requires the completion of 18 semester hours with a minimum grade of C in all courses  to include:

*Engl 340, 341, and 440 can each be taken twice for credit when content is different. The committee on the minor in film studies will also allow courses taught in other departments that match a film studies curricula. Literary Studies Concentration (ENLS):

The concentration in Literary Studies requires the completion of 18 semester hours of credit with a minimum of C in all courses. English 315, 316, 320, 321, and 322 are required for all English majors and do not count toward the Literary Studies Concentration. Students must take 15 hours of literature electives and 3 hours covering pre-19th century (see below). At least 12 hours must be 300-400 level courses.

Writing and Rhetoric Concentration (ENWR):

The concentration in Writing and Rhetoric requires the completion of 18 semester hours. Three (3) hours are required from any one of the following courses:

  • ENGL 468
  • ENGL 493

Fifteen (15) hours are required from any of the following courses:
