As a student, Jade Gregory Hornback<\/a> recalls visiting the library to watch her friends play in an ensemble in the Ellender Memorial Library stairwell.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The music students put on an impromptu library concert<\/a> in September 2022 featuring calming music for students to help them study, or relax during study breaks. This type of event is one thing Hornback, a Nicholls music alumni and now Government Information Librarian, hopes to bring back to the campus.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201cWith my background in music, I’ve taken on music as one of my liaison areas, so there’s already that opportunity to work with them,\u201d she said. \u201cMusic students, or at least I did, tend to see a lot of the same group of people, in classes they are taking from the same group of professors, so I thought it was a cool opportunity for us to meet more of the campus, and I\u2019d like to bring that back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Hornback, who plays the bass clarinet, said her path toward becoming a librarian started with a career conversation with professor Dr. Michael Bartnik, who has since moved on to Lamar University.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

\u201cI started my program pursuing music education, but I didn\u2019t really want to be a band director,\u201d she said. \u201cDr. Bartnik mentioned music librarianship, and after some research, I thought it sounded interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

So after graduating from Nicholls, Hornback earned her Master\u2019s of Science in Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During that time, she also earned an internship at Duke University\u2019s Music Library.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

\u201cIt was cool to blend my path in music and the field I decided to try out together,\u201d she said. \u201cIt helped it click that librarianship is the career for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

And once in her career, librarianship was a fairly natural fit for her as she enjoys reading and participating in book clubs with friends. She also has two cats, Alfredo and Pesto, which she says are a requirement for becoming a librarian.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cI have a hobby of collecting hobbies,\u201d Hornback said. \u201cIn addition to having cats, all librarians have a mandated grandma hobby and mine is cross stitch. I also play video games with friends though I am more of a single player person. I play an MMO by myself, Guild Wars 2.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Following some time as a public librarian in Alabama, Hornback said she was excited when she saw the opportunity at Nicholls and is happy to be home in Thibodaux again.<\/p>\n\n

Since repairs following Hurricane Ida, the Government Information department has been closed, and Hornback will be in charge of finishing the rebuild to open it up to the public and students. Though when open, the stacks will be closed, which will mean she or a student worker will need to assist students in fetching materials.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cRebuilding something like this from the ground up and to have an influence on the way it is put back together is appealing to me,\u201d she said. \u201cI also enjoy the organizational side of librarianship.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cWith interruptions, such as a recent pipe leak, it has not quite gone as expected, but it is still a fun project and I look forward to welcoming students.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Library Director Brandy Burbante said it\u2019s unfortunate that the department has experienced so many setbacks, but it\u2019s given her a good look at Hornback\u2019s character.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cI think Jade is doing great so far,\u201d Burbante said. \u201cThe fact that she has been able to handle hiccups in trying to get the Government Information department reopened, has shown her adaptability and flexibility, which are both skills that we have to have as librarians in higher education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Short term, besides of course putting the department back together, Hornback said her goal is to show off the department\u2019s resources in various displays and during campus events. And also to work on her liaison duties with departments around campus, including music.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cWe have only put on a music event in the library once since Jade was a student, but that was hosted by international students,\u201d Burbante said. \u201cI am always open to innovative programming ideas like this that create collaboration across disciplines, so having Jade\u2019s connection with the music department will be valuable to enhance our relationship with that community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
