Purpose of Announcement<\/strong>\u00a0EXAMINATION IS ANNOUNCED TO ESTABLISH AN EMPLOYMENT LIST TO FILL ONE (1) CURRENT EAST JEFFERSON VACANCIES IN THE PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICE AND FOR FUTURE VACANCIES AS THEY OCCUR.<\/p>\n

Kind of Work<\/strong>\u00a0Under general supervision, develops and manages all Jefferson Parish communications related to public relations and media relations. Acts as a backup to the Public Information Officer as needed, while also providing management backup over Public Information Office team members, as needed and when requested. Manages the research, development and dissemination of information and materials through the news media and educational programs via social media, JPTV, and the Parish website. Manages media relations for the Administration and Council (by request) by drafting and disseminating official press releases, including but not limited to department updates, emergency response, closures, parish events and programs, etc.; and, with the Public Information Officer\u2019s approval, responds to media inquiries on behalf of Jefferson Parish and drafts statements in response to media. Employee may act as a spokesperson and represent department director at Parish functions and meetings. Performs related work as required. This position is also an essential, emergency duty status worker and may not be relieved of duty when the Parish President or their designee recommends a voluntary or mandatory evacuation of Jefferson Parish. Position requires driving of a personal vehicle, thus possession of a valid driver\u2019s license, acceptable driving record, and personal automobile with minimum liability insurance available for business use (business travel is reimbursed on a mileage basis) will be given preference.<\/p>\n

Minimum Qualifications For Admission to Examination<\/strong>\u00a0Possession of a Bachelor\u2019s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework (successful completion of at least 30 credit hours) in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a closely related field;\u00a0PLUS<\/strong>, at least five (5) years of paid work experience in media relations, journalism, or public relations.\u00a0PREFERRED<\/em>: Experience with Crisis Communication. Experience with public speaking in a professional capacity. Supervisory experience.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Vacation (Annual Leave)<\/strong>\u00a0Employees accumulate one half day of paid vacation for every two weeks worked. Leave accrual rates increase with years of service. Any unused annual leave is usually paid upon separation from Parish Employment.<\/p>\n

Sick Leave<\/strong>\u00a0Employees accumulate one half day of paid sick leave for every two weeks worked. Sick leave is available for personal illness, injury or medical consultations.<\/p>\n

Holidays<\/strong>\u00a0Nine paid official holidays are observed, plus any holidays declared by Parish Officials.<\/p>\n

Life Insurance<\/strong>\u00a0All regular employees receive a life insurance policy equal to one year’s salary. Extra insurance may be purchased.<\/p>\n

Medical Insurance<\/strong>\u00a0An HMO medical insurance plan is avalable for employees and their dependents. Jefferson Parish pays 80% of the premium for employees and 50% of the premiums for dependents.<\/p>\n

A Flexible Benefits Plan<\/strong>\u00a0Employees have the opportunity to save money by paying for health insurance and optional insurance with pre-tax dollars. A Flexible Savings Account for Medical Expenses and Dependent Care is also available.<\/p>\n

Retirement<\/strong>\u00a0Most regular employees belong to the Parochial Employees’ Retirement System instead of the Social Security System. For employees hired after January 01, 2007, a pension calculated at 3% of salary per year of service is provided upon retirement at age 67 with 7 years of service, age 62 with 10 years of service, or age 55 with 30 years of service.<\/p>\n

Tenure Payment<\/strong>\u00a0Employees are paid $25 per year of service in December of each year. Employees must have worked two years before the first check is paid.<\/p>\n

Deferred Compensation Plan (457b plan)<\/strong>\u00a0Similar to 401K programs, the 457b Deferred Plan allows employees to defer up to $14,000 of pretax income each year to supplement retirement savings. Pre-tax contributions can be cashed in upon retirement or termination without penalty. This plan is provided by Nationwide Retirement Solutions 1-877-677-3678.<\/p>\n
