The College of Arts and Sciences encourages enterprising students to consider the possibility of earning double majors, or even two separate degrees, at the undergraduate level. Mathematics courses supply students with critical thinking abilities needed for any type of on-the-job problem solving. These skills enhance post-graduation opportunities. A double major in mathematics accents a student’s academic profile and provides versatility in the job market. Almost all curricula accept upper-level mathematics course work as electives, so completing a double major—or even a dual degree—may well be achievable. Majors in the sciences, in science education, mathematics education, and in business are particularly well-suited to pursue this path. Bachelors in  Mathematics

The faculty of the Department of Mathematics at Nicholls State University are dedicated to preparing students to adapt to the needs and demands of a technologically oriented society. Our tools are effective instruction combined with sound counseling. Our aim is excellence. Insuring that students achieve excellence is our greatest responsibility. We are interested in each individual student, and in that student’s progress, both academic and personal.

Our Department offers a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics with concentrations in advanced mathematics, computer science, and secondary education. The core of the program consists in a variety of courses including linear programming, statistics, numerical analysis, and modern algebra.

For students who desire to be certified in secondary school mathematics, the College of Education offers a curriculum in mathematics education. The Department of Mathematics cooperates with the College of Education in the administration of this program.

All of the courses in the program interact with one another, either by prerequisite, or by exchange of knowledge and examples. Such course interaction imitates the natural interaction among various areas in the industrial workplace. Generally, the purpose of all courses is to introduce the student to standard topics that are encountered in business and industry.

The uniqueness of the undergraduate program in mathematics at NSU lies in its emphasis on the non-traditional areas of operations research, statistics, numerical analysis, and computer science. The graduate program builds upon this foundation by offering more advanced sequences.

Who is a Mathematician?

This is not an easy question to answer briefly.  The tasks assigned to mathematicians are usually as diverse as the companies that employ them.  Mathematicians are frequently assigned to serve as mathematical consultants within teams of other specialists (engineers, accountants, sociologist, to name a few) and they are often part of a scientific team. A mathematician’s exposure to diverse areas of mathematics (calculus and non-calculus based analysis, numerical analysis, statistics, operations research), he or she may perform the function of researching and guiding a project group to and through a certain method of analysis.  Clearly the increased use of computers has greatly influenced the role of a mathematician.  He or she may perform the function of preparing a problem for solution on computing devices.  In many instances this may mean actually doing the computer programming.  In other cases the mathematician may never actually see the computer.

Numerous recruiters from industry and government agencies have recruited our graduates.  Representatives from such agencies have been regularly invited to NSU to discuss applications of mathematics and to advise our majors of career opportunities.  Mathematics graduates from Nicholls are currently employed by such firms as Bell Laboratories, Texaco, Bell South, Entergy, McDermott, Whitney National Bank, NASA, U.S. Dept. of Labor, Louisiana State University, Blue Cross, the University of Arkansas, and others.  Other graduates have elected to pursue advanced degrees in mathematics and science.

In today’s world there is an ongoing effort to quantify many aspects of our society.  There is always a need for mathematicians to numerically formulate and solve new problems.  There is demand for good applied mathematicians in all areas of our technological world: business, engineering, government, science, and others.  People at the helm of mathematics are vital to our progress as a society.  Careers for such people are diverse and abundant.  A mathematician may be employed in the areas of:
