Nicholls Bands Present American Labor Songs March 15

On Thursday, March 15th at 7:30 pm the Nicholls Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will present a concert featuring the music of Dr. Kimberly Archer, Associate Professor of Composition at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. She will be in residence at Nicholls State University to coach and teach our students the week of the concert. The concert will have the world premiere of her American Labor Songs. The work came about due to her founding of a union chapter at her institution with the financial help of Nicholls and a consortium of ten university bands and musical groups from throughout the country. Dr. Archer’s degrees have come from Florida State University, Syracuse University and the University of Texas. Her music has been performed at international conferences as well as by some of the best college bands in the United States.

On the program is another of Dr. Archer’s works, Hour of the Wolves, based on part of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Also there will be two pieces by David Maslanka, one of her mentors who passed away last year and an important wind band composer. Among the other compositions to be performed is the quintessential Second Suite in F by Gustav Holst, the thrilling Overture to Candide by Leonard Bernstein, and a medley of selections featured in James Bond films. The concert is open to the public with no admission charged.
