The Nicholls Concert Choir
The Nicholls Concert Choir performs a variety of choral literature from all historical style periods each semester and performs at least one major work each year. The Concert Choir is well known in the community for its Candlelight Christmas Concert. The choir has also performed with the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra, New Orleans Opera, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, the Acadiana Symphony and Jefferson Performing Arts Society. The Concert Choir will be performing the Faure Requiem in Carnegie Hall in New York City in May 2018.
The Nicholls Chamber Singers
The Nicholls Chamber Singers perform a variety of choral literature appropriate for small vocal ensemble. Repertoire ranges from classical works to vocal jazz. The Chamber Singers are well known for their Christmas dinners of which they have presented 20 different productions.
The Nicholls Chamber Singers have performed at or for Walt Disney World, Six Flags over Texas, Sea World-Orlando, Universal Studios – Florida, Louisiana Music Educators Association, Louisiana Fall Vocal Conference of the American Choral Conductors Association and Louisiana Federation of Music Clubs.
The Nicholls Gospel Choir, led by Dr. Valerie Francis, provides an opportunity for students to perform a variety of gospel music, both traditional and contemporary, as it relates to the African American cultural experience. The ensemble presents a minimum of one public performance per semester and is open to all students regardless of race, creed or ethnic background. The annual Celebration of the Negro Spiritual is a yearly event that highlights the Gospel Choir as a group and individual soloists. Students from Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas and Mississippi participate in the highly anticipated and unique concert at Nicholls.
The Nicholls Opera Workshop, led by Dr. Valerie Francis, is in its fifth year of operation. College students, local community members, and local elementary, middle and high school students join together for one production per year. Operas produced have been Mozart’s Don Giovanni and The Magic Flute and Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess.
