Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities
Dr. John St. Marie is an accomplished and versatile musician, conductor, and educator. He holds Bachelor degrees from Loyola University in Music Therapy and Voice, a Master of Music degree in Conducting Performance from California State University, Fullerton, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Music from the University of Southern California with an academic minor in music history, and concentrations in instrumental conducting and sacred music.
Dr. St. Marie is a highly acclaimed conductor and was the Director of Choirs from 2010 until 2017 at the internationally acclaimed arts program of the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. His students placed in local and national vocal competitions and have been accepted into renowned music institutions throughout the country. The choral program participated in professional engagements regularly including performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, the Pacific Bach Project and the California Dream Orchestra, as well being the featured choral ensemble in the critically acclaimed documentary G-Dog, directed by academy award winner Frieda Mock. Dr. St. Marie has taught at Mount San Antonio College in their acclaimed Vocal/Choral program, and was appointed as the Interim Director of Choral Studies in the 2010/11 academic year at California State University, Los Angeles where he also coordinated Vocal studies. He has been the featured Guest Conductor for the Mountainside Master Chorale and the Southern California Vocal Association Honors Choir. A feature presenter at both the California Music Education Association and the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts Education Series, Dr. St. Marie is in demand as an adjudicator and clinician in choral and vocal festivals, competitions, and honor choirs.
Dr. St. Marie is a frequent soloist in the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas and has garnered critical acclaim for his versatile, impassioned performances. As a featured soloist, Dr. St. Marie has been heard in numerous master works including Bach’s St. John Passion, Mass in B-minor, and Magnificat, Handel’s Messiah and Chandos Anthems, Vaughan Williams’ Hodie and Mass in G Minor, Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, Mass in C, and Ninth Symphony, Haydn’s Missa in angustiis and Die Schöpfung, and Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Conversion of St. Paul with professional music organizations including the Pacific Symphony, Musica Angelica, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Pacific Chorale, De Angelis Vocal Ensemble, Los Angeles Chamber Singers, Millennium Consort Singers, San Fernando Valley Master Chorale, Opera Pacific, Mountainside Master Chorale and various high-profile church music programs.
Dr. St. Marie has also performed solo work internationally and his vocal talents can be heard on 11 popular movie soundtracks, several commercial, and also popular video games on the Xbox and Playstation platforms. He has been on numerous Grammy Nominated classical recordings with the Los Angeles Master Chorale (under the direction of Paul Salamunovich), and Pacific Chorale (under the direction of John Alexander) and has even sung on pop music albums including Barbra Streisand’s Higher Ground.
