Nicholls duo to mark CD release with free concert

THIBODAUX – A piano and violin duo from the Nicholls State University Department of Music will commemorate the release of a new CD with a free, public concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, in the Mary M. Danos Theater (formerly Talbot Theater) on campus.

The Alexander-Soares Duo

The Alexander-Soares Duo – with violinist James Alexander, adjunct instructor of music, and pianist Dr. Luciana Soares, associate professor of music – specializes in music composed in the Americas, most notably in Soares’ native Brazil. Founded in 2005, the ensemble has worked with a number of composers and performed in the U.S. as well as abroad, offering master classes at various music festivals.

The duo’s recently released CD, “The Sonatas for Violin and Piano by Liduino Pitombeira,” is the result of a long-term collaboration between the Alexander-Soares Duo and Brazilian composer Liduino Pitombeira.

The concert will feature two sonatas from the duo’s Centaur Records CD as well as works by other Brazilian composers including Heitor Villa-Lobos, Souza Lima and Alexandre Levy. CDs will be available for purchase after the performance.
