Celebrate Veterans Day at Nicholls State University

THIBODAUX, La. — Nicholls State University invites you to honor all veterans during a Veterans Day celebration in the Mary and Al Danos Theater on Friday, Nov. 9.

Nicholls Veteran Services will hold a public ceremony at 11:30 a.m. in the Nicholls Quad and veterans will be served a free lunch in the cafeteria.

“Veterans Day is a day that we stand together united in support of the men and women who have courageously and selflessly served the United States of America,” said Gilberto Burbante, coordinator of veterans services at Nicholls. “Our local heroes are such a source of inspiration and pride. I cannot thank our servicemen and women enough for their commitment and the sacrifices they have made for our country.”

This year’s guest speaker is Rusten May, the chief privacy officer and counsel for Tulane University, who earned a bronze star and purple heart as a member of a sniper team on a combat tour in Iraq. May, who joined the military following the events on Sept. 11, graduated from Nicholls with a degree in business administration upon finishing his service and is now a licensed attorney. He represents veterans on a pro bono basis and has provided legal counsel to Peoples Health, the Louisiana Public Service Commission and the Department of Insurance.

Thibodaux JROTC will present the colors and the Nicholls chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia will sing the national anthem.

Nicholls has earned the “Governor’s Military and Veteran Friendly Campus” designation and has consistently been named a “Military Friendly School” by G.I. Jobs magazine.
