Center for Bayou Studies to announce Lafourche Heritage Days

THIBODAUX, La. — The Center for Bayou Studies at Nicholls State University will announce the declaration of Lafourche Heritage Days on Nov. 10 in presentations both up and down the bayou.

Dr. John Doucet, Alcee Fortier Distinguished Service Professor and dean of the College of Arts and Science, will read a proclamation approved by the Lafourche Parish Council earlier this year, declaring Nov. 1 through Nov. 14 as Lafourche Heritage Days and discuss why those days were chosen.

“Lafourche Heritage Days was conceived by the Center for Bayou Studies to help Lafourche Parish citizens commemorate the origins of their diverse heritage and to advocate for the preservation of that heritage in the face of coastal land loss,” Dr. Doucet said. “The dates were selected to recognize the first mass settlement in Lafourche, which corresponds to the arrival of Acadian refugees in 1785. We hope people will celebrate Lafourche Heritage Days in appropriately diverse ways each year.”

Dr. Doucet will give his first presentation at 10 a.m. in the Thibodaux branch library located at 705 W 5th St., and his second at 1 p.m. in the South Lafourche branch located at 16421 E. Main St. in Cut Off.

“There are not many places that can trace the origin of their culture to the arrival of a group of people the way Lafourche can,” said Dr. Gary LaFleur, director of the Center for Bayou Studies. “It’s a worthwhile celebration to think about how our parish and our territory got started and how many of those same people that started that colony, their families are still here today.”

The Center for Bayou Studies studies the environment and culture of the Bayou Region in an effort to preserve the culture, serve the community and support Nicholls.
