Hana Calhoun was named an Outstanding Dietetic Student by the Louisiana Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

THIBODAUX, La. — A Nicholls student and alumna were recognized for their accomplishments in the field of nutrition at the Louisiana Academy for Nutrition and Dietetics annual conference.

Co-founder and owner of the Houma-based Root2Rise, Leah Porche (BS ‘12) was named the academy’s Young Dietitian of the Year. The award is given annually to registered dietitians under the age of 35 who are leaders in policy, influence, outreach, education or management in nutrition and dietetics. Root2Rise has offered fresh-pressed juices, healthy snacks and daily yoga since the business opened in December 2015.

Senior dietetics major Hana Calhoun, of Houma, was named an Outstanding Dietetic Student. Students are recognized for their achievements in and out of the classroom.

“I’m extremely proud of Leah and Hannah. These two are great representatives of nutrition and Nicholls State University,” said Dr. Brigett Scott, associate professor and department head of allied health sciences.
Porche and Calhoun received their awards in April during the conference held in Baton Rouge.

An affiliate of the national organization, the Louisiana Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is a professional organization that represents more than 1,000 dietetic nutrition experts in the Pelican State. The organization seeks to promote healthy eating and living in Louisiana.
