{"id":3472,"date":"2012-02-13T10:40:00","date_gmt":"2012-02-13T16:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/?p=3472"},"modified":"2012-02-13T10:40:00","modified_gmt":"2012-02-13T16:40:00","slug":"nicholls-enrollment-leaner-yet-stronger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/2012\/02\/13\/nicholls-enrollment-leaner-yet-stronger\/","title":{"rendered":"Nicholls enrollment leaner, yet stronger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THIBODAUX \u2013\u00a0 Higher-caliber students are earning their degrees at a faster rate than in years past, according to official enrollment statistics for the spring 2012 semester at Nicholls State University.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2012\/01\/Nicholls.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3307 alignright lazyload\" title=\"Nicholls\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2012\/01\/Nicholls-220x142.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"142\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 220px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 220\/142;\" \/><\/a>\u201cMore of our students are finishing their degrees in four years,\u201d Leslie Dishman, director of assessment and institutional research, said. \u201cThese are trends that we will continue to see with our increasingly high-quality incoming freshman students.<\/p>\n<p>Overall enrollment is 6,088, a 4.7-percent decline since last spring, which is consistent with administrative projections. Dishman said, \u201cThe spring 2012 decline is the outcome of a smaller fall enrollment, resulting from more stringent admissions requirements, and an increase in graduation rates. Accordingly, our student body is a more committed, better-prepared group of students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is important to remember that the spring 2011 commencement resulted in a record number of degrees. We also had a high number of degrees awarded for the summer and fall 2011 semesters,\u201d Dishman said. \u201cPlus, we anticipate another large graduating class this May.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Stephen T. Hulbert, university president, said the figures are not only expected, but encouraging. \u201cOur students are staying at Nicholls, progressing to degree more rapidly, and earning that degree earlier than ever before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe academic quality of our student body is definitely improving,\u201d he said. \u201cOur rolls are a bit leaner, but our classrooms are also full of committed and capable students.
