{"id":4150,"date":"2012-06-21T09:06:25","date_gmt":"2012-06-21T14:06:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/?p=4150"},"modified":"2012-06-21T09:06:25","modified_gmt":"2012-06-21T14:06:25","slug":"ncaa-reports-academic-excellence-at-nicholls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/2012\/06\/21\/ncaa-reports-academic-excellence-at-nicholls\/","title":{"rendered":"NCAA reports academic excellence at Nicholls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THIBODAUX \u2013 For the third consecutive year, all of Nicholls State University\u2019s 14 sports programs have performed above academic standard, according to information released this week by the National Collegiate Athletic Association on the academic progress rates (APR) of all NCAA Division I teams.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2012\/06\/Colonels-Wordmark.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-4151 lazyload\" title=\"Colonels Wordmark\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2012\/06\/Colonels-Wordmark-540x325.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"144\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 240px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 240\/144;\" \/><\/a>The APR is part of an academic reform package established by the NCAA nine years ago \u2013 the goal of which is to improve classroom performance and graduation rates of student athletes by concentrating on athlete retention and eligibility.<\/p>\n<p>Every Division I sports team calculates its APR each academic year based on the eligibility and retention of each scholarship-holding student athlete. Teams scoring below certain thresholds can face sanctions, such as scholarship losses and restrictions on practice. Rates are based on the past four years\u2019 performance. The Division I Board of Directors last fall approved tougher academic standards, including setting a new standard that teams must meet to compete in the postseason. The standard for postseason access starts at 900 APR but over the next few years climbs to 930, which equates to a 50-percent Graduation Success Rate.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010-11, Nicholls had three teams with perfect scores of 1,000: men\u2019s golf, men\u2019s tennis and women\u2019s cross country.\u00a0Moreover, all 14 Nicholls athletics teams scored above 930, with 11 scoring above 950.<\/p>\n<p>For multi-year rates, 13 of 14 Nicholls teams scored above 930, with nine at 950 or above. This rate exceeds the 2009-10 record, when only seven teams scored 950 or above.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI commend our student athletes as well as our faculty, staff and coaches for their commitment to academic excellence,\u201d Dr. Stephen T.
