Others who currently hold the titles include Dr. Al Davis, dean of University College; Dr. Marilyn Kilgen, distinguished service professor of biological sciences; and Dr. Betty Kleen, distinguished service professor of information systems and director of university graduate studies.<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese educators represent the best of the best among Nicholls faculty,\u201d Dr. Allayne \u201cLaynie\u201d Barrilleaux, vice president for academic affairs, said. \u201cEarl and Raj are well deserving of this honor, and I am proud to be part of an institution with such outstanding educators.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Boopathy <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4394\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4394\" style=\"width: 67px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2012\/08\/Boopathy.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4394 lazyload\" title=\"Dr. Raj Boopathy Portrait\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2012\/08\/Boopathy-360x540.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"67\" height=\"101\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 67px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 67\/101;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4394\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Boopathy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In addition to teaching, Boopathy studies ways to help sugarcane farmers eliminate the practice of cane burning. He has received funding from the Governor\u2019s Energy Initiative to develop methods to produce fuel grade ethanol from sugarcane waste, such as sugarcane leaf litter and bagasse.<\/p>\n<p>Boopathy earned his baccalaureate and doctorate degrees from the University of Madras and his master\u2019s degree from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Melancon<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4396\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4396\" style=\"width: 68px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2012\/08\/Melancon.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4396 lazyload\" title=\"Earl Melancon - Biology Department\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2012\/08\/Melancon-362x540.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"68\" height=\"102\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 68px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 68\/102;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4396\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Melancon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Outside the classroom, Melancon\u2019s specialties include estuarine ecology, especially commercial shellfish, oysters, blue crabs, shrimp and crawfish. He also focuses on coastal restoration. A frequent expert source for media representatives, Melancon\u2019s face is well-recognized both on and off campus.<\/p>\n<p>He earned his baccalaureate degree from Nicholls, followed by master\u2019s and doctorate degrees from LSU.<\/p>\n<p>The Alcee Fortier distinguished service professorship is presented to faculty members with a reputation for excellence in instruction, dedication to academics, outstanding professional relationships and distinguished professional accomplishments.
