{"id":71,"date":"2007-10-31T14:36:14","date_gmt":"2007-10-31T19:36:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/2007\/10\/31\/nicholls-fletcher-lecture-to-feature-prominent-essayist\/"},"modified":"2007-10-31T14:36:14","modified_gmt":"2007-10-31T19:36:14","slug":"nicholls-fletcher-lecture-to-feature-prominent-essayist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/2007\/10\/31\/nicholls-fletcher-lecture-to-feature-prominent-essayist\/","title":{"rendered":"Nicholls Fletcher Lecture to Feature Prominent Essayist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THIBODAUX \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Dr. Gerald Early, a nationally recognized essayist and critic of American culture, will be the featured speaker Thursday, Nov. 8, at the annual Fletcher Lecture Series.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/files\/2007\/11\/photo156_small.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Gerald Early\" align=\"left\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/>Early is a professor of English, African American studies and American cultural studies at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., where he also serves as the Merle Kling professor of modern letters and the director for the Center for Humanities.<\/p>\n<p>Early has compiled and edited numerous volumes of essays on culture, ranging from family and sports to music and poetry. He is also a National Public Radio commentator, fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and winner of the 1994 National Book Critics Circle Award for criticism. Early has twice been nominated for Grammy Awards in the Best Album Notes category.<\/p>\n<p>The Fletcher Lecture Series will consist of a question and answer session with Early at 10:30 a.m. in Le Bijou Theater and his keynote address at 6 p.m. in Talbot Theater. A reception will be held prior to the lecture in the Talbot lobby area.<\/p>\n<p>Early\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s question and answer session and lecture is free and open to the public.
