THIBODAUX, La. — A Nicholls professor will discuss the power of poetry during a national educators conference that began today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Anthony Kunkel will take part in a roundtable discussion titled \u201cThe Power of Poetry to Enhance Inquiry in the ELA Classroom.\u201d The roundtable will be during the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) annual convention on Nov. 21-24 in Baltimore. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Kunkel presented on using \u201cvisual poetry\u201d in the classroom at last year\u2019s convention. Visual poetry challenges students to use phrasing, visual effects and technology, Dr. Kunkel says. Following the event, the English Language Arts Teacher Educators organization invited him to join the talk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cStudents today process their world at a fast pace. Sometimes phrasing can get lost in text speak and memes,\u201d Dr. Kunkel said. \u201cKids appreciate poetry and lyrics even more today. But they are often ignored as a means to help students write to express themselves. With all the tech available today, we want to give future teachers a way to engage students on a very creative and relevant level.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
For more than a century, NCTE has provided support to teachers and students from K-12 to college campuses. They offer journals and publications to help advance the voice of educators. Each convention hosts thousands of educators to discuss research, lesson plans and strategies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Nicholls College of Education and Behavioral Sciences produces about 80 percent of the Bayou Region teachers. Our alumni are award-winning teachers, principals, administrators and legislators. The college also oversees some of the most impactful programs across campus, including the pre-K program, Little Colonel\u2019s Academy; the transformative Bridge to Independence Program for students with autism and other intellectual disabilities; and the Louisiana Center for Dyslexia and Related Learning Disorders.
