THIBODAUX, La. — Nicholls Assistant Professor of Biology Dr. Solomon David was a keynote speaker at the 152nd National Meeting of the American Fisheries Society on Aug. 21-25, 2022, in Spokane, Washington. The Annual Meeting brought together over 1,700 professionals from countries across the world under the theme \u201cWhat Do Fish Mean to Us?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

His talk titled \u201cModern Conservation Insights from Ancient Fishes\u201d focused on the concepts of diverse fishes and diverse voices, connecting biodiversity and conservation with diversity, equity and inclusion and how they benefit each other.<\/span><\/p>\n

David used current research and personal stories focused on native fishes with Louisiana\u2019s gar fish playing a central role. His talk also featured the Nicholls biology graduate program and students.<\/span><\/p>\n

Graduate students in the Marine and Environmental Biology program Dinah Cador and Kati Wright both attended the national conference. Dinah Cador presented on a synthesis of floodplain restoration and fish ecology research done by David\u2019s GarLab and collaborators.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This was the first national conference that Dinah and Kati attended, giving the students important opportunities for networking with graduate students from programs across the country as well as other academics and professionals.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cConservation of biodiversity goes hand-in-hand with diversity, equity and inclusion. It was a privilege to share about the important relationship between \u2018diverse fishes and diverse voices\u2019 using my personal story and connection to the bayou\u2019s amazing ancient gars,\u201d said Dr. Solomon David. \u201cMy students welcomed the opportunity to meet and network with their peers and professionals. We appreciate the support for the conference attendance, professional development and outreach opportunities like these.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
