The invitation-only event included the film screening, a coastal expert panel and a networking reception sponsored by Entergy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The film follows <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/data\/tcr\/AL092021_Ida.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hurricane Ida<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> through the eyes of those in Lafourche, Terrebonne and Grand Isle, featuring stories from residents, government officials, community leaders and meteorologists. The documentary was produced by Nicholls State University with a grant from the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bayoucf.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bayou Community Foundation\u2019s<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bayou Recovery Fund for Hurricane Ida Relief.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As the fifth-largest storm ever to hit the United States and with max wind speeds of 150 mph, the Category 4 hurricane made landfall on the 16th anniversary of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/mob\/katrina\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hurricane Katrina<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, bringing devastating winds and storm surge to Louisiana\u2019s coastal regions. Ida is the second most-damaging hurricane to hit Louisiana since Katrina in 2005.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since 1935, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/btnep.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Barataria-Terrebonne<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> basins have lost about 600,000 acres of land. Louisiana loses a football field of coastal islands and wetlands every 100 minutes and has experienced the highest rate of wetlands loss in the country, accounting for 80% of the nation\u2019s coastal wetland loss, with more than 2,000 square miles turned to open water, an area roughly the size of Delaware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To preserve and protect the coast from future storms, Nicholls is set to open its Coastal Center, with a groundbreaking slated for fall 2023. The $21 million project will be located on the Nicholls campus at the corner of Colonel Drive and Ardoyne Drive, across from Calecas Hall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The collaborative space will allow scientists from all over the state and beyond, including those from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coastal.la.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewaterinstitute.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the Water Institute of the Gulf <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and Nicholls <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/biology\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">biological sciences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/applied-sciences\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">geomatics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> departments, to collaborate and advance research to repair and rebuild the state\u2019s receding coastline.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Coastal Center will work directly with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/2023\/02\/28\/chevron-donated-50k-to-develop-nicholls-bayou-region-incubator-and-the-student-entrepreneur-innovation-center\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bayou Region Incubator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to help create jobs and small businesses specific to the coastal community.
