The scholarship is awarded through a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pcaobus.org\/about\/scholars-program#selectnomination\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">nomination process<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and is available to students at universities based on a tier system. Nicholls\u2019 accounting program is in group 1, which includes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">all regionally accredited institutions with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aacsb.edu\/educators\/accreditation\/accounting-accreditation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">AACSB accredited<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> accounting programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since 2011, the PCAOB has administered a scholarship program for undergraduate and graduate accounting students enrolled in accredited U.S. colleges and universities. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pcaobus.org\/about\/scholars-program#selectnomination\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">PCAOB Scholars Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is mandated by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/107th-congress\/house-bill\/3763\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sarbanes-Oxley Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and is funded through monetary penalties collected as part of PCAOB enforcement actions. The PCAOB Scholars Program seeks to benefit students who are likely to become auditors and to make a difference to students who might otherwise choose a different career path.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students must be selected and nominated by their institution. Some of the PCAOB Scholar eligibility criteria includes:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Being enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate accounting program at U.S. colleges or universities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Having an overall GPA of 3.3 or higher or being in the top 1\/3 of their overall class<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Demonstrating high ethical standards and a financial need<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/business\/faculty\/dr-kevin-breaux\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Kevin Breaux<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Nicholls accounting and finance department head and professor of accounting, nominated Tamiyah. Dr. Breaux said, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tamiyah is an outstanding student with an overall 4.0 GPA, double majoring in both accounting and finance. She is always engaged in class discussions and frequently helps her fellow classmates to understand the content. Outside of the classroom, Tamiyah participates in several events on campus to raise awareness of the accounting profession along with participating in events designed to help recruit high school students to our campus, but more specifically, to our accounting program,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tamiyah, a LaPlace native, attended East St. John High School. Outside of her studies, she maintains a campus job in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/recreation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">recreation center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, works as an audit intern for a regional accounting firm and is actively involved in the Chi Alpha Campus Ministry. Tamiyah volunteers her time coaching recreational volleyball and is a community church worship leader. Upon graduation in May of 2024, she plans on obtaining her CPA license, attending graduate school and pursuing a successful career in auditing.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The PCAOB Scholars Program is merit-based, but the PCAOB encourages educational institutions to give special consideration to students from populations that have been historically underrepresented in the accounting profession.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/business\/accounting\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">AACSB-accredited accounting program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at Nicholls positively impacts the social and economic vitality of the program\u2019s service area and beyond by positioning students to successfully meet workforce development needs as well-educated, responsible, and engaged accounting professionals.
