The Student Programming Association (SPA) is run by students for students. All Nicholls students are automatically members. As the largest student-led organization at Nicholls, the SPA seeks primarily to enhance and improve campus life. It does this by sponsoring events that focus on entertainment, culture, recreation and social life, as well as activities that contribute to the university’s academic mission.
SPA plans numerous events throughout the year. These include film showings, recreational and school-spirit activities, cultural and holiday celebrations, Homecoming Week activities, Comedy Night, Mardi Gras Breakfast and Dance, and Crawfish Day.
Student involvement is essential in the planning and execution of all SPA activities. Students wishing to become active can do so by participating in a committee, serving on the executive board, volunteering at events or just by sharing ideas. Working in a collaborative environment, students gain hands-on experience in event planning, vendor evaluation/selection, business practices, and university policies and procedures. The SPA has five standing committees: Entertainment, Multicultural, Special Events, Spirit, and Union Activities.

The Student Programming Association (SPA) was established in 1981 for the purpose of planning and presenting activities that enhance and improve the educational and social atmosphere of the university and community.
The SPA is managed by an executive board composed of nine student leaders. The president and vice president are elected annually by the student body during the spring semester. The five committee chairs are chosen each semester by a group of student peers. There are five committees: Entertainment, Multicultural, Special Events, Spirit and Travel, and Union Activities.

SPA’s mission is to enhance the academic, cultural, recreational, entertainment and social life of Nicholls. To accomplish this, SPA provides leadership development through hands-on planning, marketing, and implementing and assessing campus-based entertainment and social activities. Students engage in collaborative processes, event planning, and real-world business practices while conforming to university policies and procedures.

All Nicholls students are SPA members! We are a student-led organization representing each and every Nicholls student. Student involvement is essential in the planning and execution of all SPA activities. Students wishing to become active can do so by participating in a committee, serving on the board, volunteering at events or just by sharing ideas.
Prospective SPA members should complete the Student Programming Association Member Application Form to be included in all SPA communications.

Some events are not easily categorized or interact with other student organizations and/or university departments. The Special Events Committee plans and implements a wide range of special events for students. Samples include Welcome Back Day, Homecoming Week, Family Day and Crawfish Day, to name but a few.

The Entertainment Committee plans, produces, and staffs a variety of comedy and musical acts, dances, block parties, pool parties and other events that provide entertainment and social values for Nicholls’ diverse student population.

The Multicultural committee works in conjunction with other campus departments and entities to sponsor artist and lecture activities, as well as providing for cultural activities and holidays celebrations.

Jean Marie Young
Specializing in off-campus program opportunities, the Spirit and Travel Committee is responsible for providing students with experiential learning and travel opportunities. The committee gives the athletic teams huge support by promoting school spirit and sponsoring several away-game bus trips. Expect lots of spirited pep rallies, tailgating, and travel opportunities.

The Donald G. Bollinger Memorial Student Union is the epicenter for campus life. The Union Activities Committee plans and coordinates events that take place inside the union. Gaming tournaments, art contests, holiday celebrations, movies, and end-of-the-semester stress busters are samples of this committee’s work to keep students involved in campus life.

SPA Sponsorship Funding
SPA is here to help your on-campus organization or department! We can provide financial assistance for student-centered events and marketing. All funding request must be submitted at least three weeks prior to the event date. Once the Funding Request Form is submitted, SPA will review the request and notify the organization with approval or denial. If you have any questions, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org! Please note that SPA does not accept requests from (1) Greek Organizations, (2) events that serve as a fundraiser for organizations, or (3) private organization events.
