Acquiring $5 million in two years is an unrealistic dream for most education professionals. Shannon Lafont is proof dreams can come true — if you are a determined grant writer.
After teaching for six years at Caldwell Middle School in Terrebonne Parish, Lafont was hired as the grant and contract writer for Lafourche Parish School Board. During her years in the classroom, she received the 2000 Louisiana Science Teachers Association’s Essie Beck Rising Star Award, became one of eight 2003 finalists for Louisiana Teacher of the Year and obtained National Board certification in early adolescent science in 2003.
“What best prepared me for my career was the real-life field experiences I got through Nicholls,” Lafont says. “The experiences actually put classroom activities and theories into practice.”
Lafont’s most memorable moments at Nicholls were during Crawfish Day, where she enjoyed relaxing and eating boiled crawfish with friends.
“The climate and culture at Nicholls make you feel like you’re at home,” Lafont says. “The faculty and staff are always willing to put forth the extra effort.”
