Services in the Reading Center, located in 125 Polk Hall, include assessment of children’s reading difficulties and tutoring. Students in both the initial and advanced teacher education programs complete their practicum experiences in the center.
The center was developed as an outreach service for the community. Students from the Region III school systems come to the center for diagnostic and remediation services. Elementary education students are required to take EDUC 403 — Clinical Analysis of Reading Difficulties where they are trained in procedures, methods and materials for analyzing and correcting reading disabilities. Within this course, Nicholls students tutor disabled readers.
The center houses tutoring carols and other materials for working with disabled readers. Graduate candidates pursing a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction with a reading specialist concentration also provide services through coursework in their program.
