You send it, usually accompanied by an application letter, to potential employers when seeking job interviews.<\/p><h2>Structure<\/h2><p>Although r\u00e9sum\u00e9 structure can vary, in most cases, you should include the following sections in the order indicated:<\/p><h4>Header<\/h4><p>Positioned at the top of the page. Here, state your name, mailing address, email, and phone number.<\/p><h4>Summary (<em>Optional<\/em>)<\/h4><p>Some people list their most important qualifications, skills, and work experience in a summary below the header. Actually, this section is most useful for people who have been in their careers for a while. It\u2019s a good way to create one common spot on the r\u00e9sum\u00e9 to list those key qualifications about yourself that may be spread throughout the r\u00e9sum\u00e9.<\/p><h4>Education<\/h4><p><strong>In reverse chronological order<\/strong>, list the colleges that you\u2019ve attended, including location (e.g., city and state), degree, area of study, and dates attended. Highlight accomplishments such as a strong GPA, academic awards, etc. Don\u2019t include high school unless you haven\u2019t attended college.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone you have it, include it:<\/em><\/p><ul><li>Military experience<\/li><li>Foreign language proficiency<\/li><\/ul><p><em>Include only if relevant to the position for which you\u2019re applying:<\/em><\/p><ul><li>Volunteer experience<\/li><li>Organizations and affiliations<\/li><li>Licensing and certifications<\/li><li>Computer and technology skills<\/li><li>Awards and honors<\/li><\/ul><h4>References (<em>Optional<\/em>)<\/h4><p>According to Mike Markel, \u201cAlthough applicants in the past added a note stating \u2018References available upon request\u2019 at the end of their r\u00e9sum\u00e9s, many applicants today do not do so because they think the comment is unnecessary: employers assume that applicants can provide a list of references\u2014and that they would love to do so.\u201d<\/p><h2>Design<\/h2><p>For a good overview of basic design principles, I recommend Robin Williams\u2019 <em>The Non-Designer\u2019s Design Book<\/em> or Joseph Moxley\u2019s <em>Writing Commons<\/em> article \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/writingcommons.org\/article\/principles-of-design\/\">Principles of Design<\/a>.\u201d<\/p><h4>Tips<\/h4><ul><li>Limit your r\u00e9sum\u00e9 to one or two pages in length.<\/li><li>Use typography and other design elements (such as alignment and white space) to clearly contrast headings, subheadings, body text, lists, etc.<\/li><li>Be consistent in your design choices: don\u2019t use different fonts for your \u201cEducation\u201d and \u201cWork Experience\u201d headings, for instance.<\/li><\/ul><h4>An Example<\/h4><p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/practicaltypography.com\/resumes.html\">section on r\u00e9sum\u00e9s<\/a>\u00a0in Matthew Butterick\u2019s\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/practicaltypography.com\/\">Practical Typography<\/a><\/em> shares a revised r\u00e9sum\u00e9 that serves as an excellent example of a well-designed document.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-18d052a elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"18d052a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1b3dc9e elementor-widget
