June 23, 2022 marked the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX. The legislation gave girls and women more opportunities in sports in high school and college. Nicholls is proud to be committed to giving our women expanded opportunities while celebrating our past, present and future.

In 1972, approximately 300,000 women and girls competed in collegiate athletics and high school sports. Statistically, only two percent of female college teams received college athletic funds from their college, while scholarships for women practically did not exist. In 2012, 40 years after the passage of Title IX, more than three million women were competing in high school and college athletics.According to the Women’s Sports Foundation, two in every five girls in the United States play sports. That number was one in 27 prior to Title IX.

With this event we pay homage to women having a seat at the table. Celebrating the fact that women on Nicholls’ campus and beyond are afforded equal opportunity to compete and succeed both on and off the field. Proceeds from this event will greatly impact women’s teams through scholarships.

Nicholls women’s teams make up 9 of the 17 sports at Nicholls and nearly 40% of the 350 student-athletes are female. It is important to not only celebrate Nicholls women but also to encourage men to be a part of the conversation as well.
The evening will celebrate the history of women in athletics at Nicholls while recognizing the newest Hall of Fame and Hall of Distinction honorees.

Tables of 10 will be affixed around the room with 2 seats at each table reserved for Nicholls coaches, and current and former student-athletes. Join the Nicholls Community in celebrating this historic milestone and how far we have come while continuing to strive for excellence in the many years to come.
