General Guidelines to Keep Yourself Safe Online

Use Secure Networks, such as your local home network.  (the free wi-fi available at most locations, such as coffee shops, airports, and restaurants may allow hackers to access your information)

    • Utilize the NSU VPN whenever possible while not connected to a secure network.

Beware of Phishing (Email), Vishing (Phone), and Smishing (SMS Text) Scams, typically these are from unknown or unsolicited sources that:

    • Requests personal information
    • Requests that you follow a link
    • Requests that you open an attached file
    • Requests physical goods or money be sent to the sender or another person
    • Requests information or goods that are out of the norm from the sender in question
    • Uses broken or misspelled Language

Always contact a user directly before sending money, gifts, or personal information requested through Email or Text

Protect your passwords, make them unique, and difficult for others to guess.

Protect Your PC:

    • Never leave your PC unattended while using online services and apps. Always exit online services or apps lock your device when not in use.
    • Install and use a quality anti-virus program.

Keep your PC, Tablet, or Phone software and apps up to date. 

Use approved online file storage services such as Google Drive for storing and sharing documents online.  Services such as Dropbox, OneDrive, etc are not officially recommended or supported by NSU IT.

Never send sensitive or personally identifiable information such as Social Security Numbers, credit card numbers, financial records, or health records via Email.
