HUMAN PERFORMANCE EDUCATION (HPED 13.13)

Activity Courses – Students may select an activity course that emphasizes lifetime skills, sports skills, or movement arts to satisfy the personal wellness component of the general education requirements. A common two week wellness module is included in each course.

Lifetime Skills – Principles, assessment, and development of total well-being through health-related physical fitness across the life span.

HPED 252. Introduction to Health and Physical Education. 3-3-0. Historical influences, philosophical positions, and the current status of sport, health and physical education pedagogy, and fitness. (13.1314)

HPED 270. First Aid. 2-1-2. Preparation of participants to respond to emergency situations with confidence in their ability to perform the necessary skills. Appropriate first aid certificates may be granted to those who qualify.  (13.1307)

HPED 340. Introduction to Motor Learning. 3-3-0. Motor skill learning principles applied to instructional and rehabilitation situations; psychological and physiological characteristics that influence skill learning. (13.1314)

HPED 360. Exercise Physiology. 3-3-0. Prerequisite: BIOL 114. Biological adaptation to physical training. Physical fitness, training methods, and body systems response to activity. Exercise tests required. (13.1314)

HPED 373. Teaching Elementary Physical Education. 3-3-0. Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education program. Description of teaching functions, the skills that constitute those functions, and the principles that guide their selection and use in the elementary school. Field experience required. (13.1314)

HPED 375. Kinesiology. 3-3-0. Prerequisite: BIOL 114. General human anatomy with emphasis on factors influencing movement; action of joints and muscles in natural movements, daily life, and sports. (13.1314)

Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education Program. Description of teaching functions, the skills that constitute those functions, and the principles that guide their selection and use in secondary school. HPED 393. Introducing Physical Education for All Children with Disabilities. 3-3-0. Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education program. Identification of motor abilities of children with disabilities; how programs can be adjusted to suit their needs and interests. (13.1314)

HPED 411. Health and Wellness Education. 3-3-0. Emphasis on health and wellness relative to the schools and community. (13.1304)

HPED 412. Psychosocial Aspects of Physical Activity. 3-3-0. Psychological factors affecting skill acquisition, performance, and behavior in play, games, and sport, including implications for teachers and coaches. (13.1314)

HPED 460. Advanced Exercise Physiology. 3-3-0. Prerequisite: HPED 360. Biological and chemical responses and adaptations of muscular, skeletal, metabolic, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems to exercise and sport. Participation in assessments of work capacity required. (13.1314)

HPED 492. The Adult Health and Development Program. 3-3-0. Fundamentals of health and aging. Students are paired with community members fifty years old and older to improve the health and well being of all. (13.1314)

HPED 494. Behavior Impairment and Physical Education. 3-2-2. Prerequisite: HPED 393 or permission of instructor. Appropriate physical education settings for children labeled as mentally retarded, emotionally disturbed, or learning disabled. Participation in schools required. (13.1314)

HPED 495. Chronic Disability and Physical Education. 3-2-2. Prerequisite: HPED 494 or permission of department head. Adjusted physical education programs for children with overt physical and/or sensory disabilities of a long lasting nature. Participation in schools required. (13.1314)

HPED 496. The Physical Education Curriculum for All Children with Disabilities. 3-3-0. Prerequisite: HPED 495 or permission of department head. Curriculum needs, implementation, and evaluation as required by Louisiana State Regulations and Physical Education Need Assessment. (13.1314)

HPED 497. Special Methods and Materials of Instruction. 3-0-6. Methods and instructional materials. Emphasis on newer materials and techniques. Course may be repeated for credit if content of each offering different. (13.1314)
