Nicholls’ nursing instructor presents at local conference

LAFAYETTE, La. – Ms. Dianne Richoux, Instructor of Nursing at Nicholls State University, presented her career experiences at the 2019 Louisiana Association of Student Nurses (LASN) conference this past October in Lafayette. Ms. Richoux has served as a Pediatric Oncology Nurse for 32 years, and her unique experiences made her a perfect candidate to present. During her presentation, Ms. Richoux expressed the challenges of working with children diagnosed with cancer, but also expressed the multiple elations she received while working with those children. She emphasized how rewarding it can be to see a child survive against the odds, and recalled multiple accounts of children going over and beyond their doctors’ expectations.

Nicholls, SLCC Make Pact to Enhance Student Pathways to Higher Education

MORGAN CITY, La. — Nicholls State University and South Louisiana Community College signed an agreement Thursday that will ease the transfer process, helping more students attain access to higher education.

Nicholls President Dr. Jay Clune and SLCC Chancellor Dr. Natalie Harder signed a memorandum of understanding on Aug. 26 at SLCC’s Young Memorial Campus in Morgan City. The understanding will allow students who have completed the associate of general studies degree program at SLCC to transfer all credits into the bachelor of interdisciplinary studies at Nicholls. This transfer pact follows four similar agreements signed in the fall.

“We are excited to expand our partnership with South Louisiana Community College that we started last year,” said Dr. Clune. “Increasing student pathways for success is one of our goals as an institution of higher education and agreements like this one align perfectly with that mission.”

In the fall, the two institutions signed four memorandums of understanding covering nursing, criminal justice, business administration and biology. The agreements take effect immediately and set in stone the classes that will transfer over to Nicholls, making it easier for graduates with an associates degree from the aforementioned programs from SLCC to transfer to Nicholls.

“It’s always a great day when the community college can align with its university partners for student success and educational attainment,” said Dr. Harder. “Nicholls State University is always willing to work so closely with our leadership and faculty on these agreements. This is another continuation of our commitment to the residents of Morgan City and St. Mary Parish by offering this additional educational opportunity.”

Nicholls nursing program continues to exceed national average

THIBODAUX — Nicholls State University’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program continues to exceed the national average on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) with a 95 percent pass rate.

The NCLEX-RN is a national standardized exam used by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing to measure a nursing candidate’s minimum safety preparedness for entry-level nursing practice. With a 95 percent pass rate for first-time takers during calendar year 2015, up from 91.96 percent in 2014, the Nicholls nursing program is well above the national pass rate of 84.5 percent and the Louisiana pass rate of 89.3 percent.

“Maintaining such an exceptional pass rate means nurses who graduate from the accredited Nicholls nursing program are able to meet the demanding outcomes that we establish and expect, thereby supplying hospitals and health clinics with strong entry-level nurses capable of providing their patients with safe care,” said Rebecca Lyons, Associate Dean, College of Nursing. “Our program’s success is a testament to not only our hardworking students, but also our committed faculty and supportive administration.”

In addition to above-average licensure pass rates, 90 percent of fall 2015 Nicholls nursing graduates reported gaining employment in the nursing field prior to graduation.
