Maritime Management Concentration

Coupled with the four-year management degree, the Maritime Management Concentration will prepare the student for a career in general management in the maritime industry. Particular focus is on the oil and gas sector and requirements of the shipowner, as well as periphery businesses. The student will receive exposure to commercial, legal, financial and other areas unique to this sector of the shipping industry.

The Maritime Management Concentration is the only four-year business program in the state designed specifically to address the needs of the oil and gas sector of the maritime industry. Funded and developed by regional maritime related firms, the program is designed to create additional value for both students and employers. While the program has a focus on maritime issues, it is incorporated into the management degree. As a result, students maintain flexibility in pursuing careers in not only the maritime industry but also in those that support the industry and the business world in general.

Our maritime management courses are also available to non-degree-seeking students who are currently working in the industry or those simply wishing to further their knowledge of the maritime field.

In addition to the more traditional courses in the management degree, students will enroll in courses specifically designed to address issues faced by firms competing in the maritime industry. The courses include:

MNGT 330 – Introduction to Maritime Management
BSAD 325 – Admiralty Law
ECON 330 – Economics of Shipping
SATC 240 – Marine Accident Prevention
MNGT 469 – Internship

The summer internships are developed and approved by the College of Business and firms in the industry.  They are designed to provide students with relevant hands-on experience in the field.

Students in the program have completed internships at Bollinger Shipyards, Crescent Towing, Edison Chouest Offshore, Galliano Marine Services, Garber Brothers Towing, Oceaneering, Offshore Marine Contractors, and SEACOR Marine. We thank them for their support.
