SNAP Benefits 101 - What You Need to Know
- SNAP Is a food assistance program that provides monthly benefits to help you pay for food.
- Students enrolled at least half-time in an institution of higher education may be eligible to receive aid through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

Apply:
- Online and receive your EBT card in the mail

Students that meet one of the following criteria MAY be eligible:
- Federal work study students working a minimum of 20 hours per week.
- Work at least 20 hours per week in other paid employment.
- Participate in an on-the-job training program.
- A state or local government employment and training program.
- A single parent enrolled full-time in college and taking care of a child under 12.
- Receive Family Independence Temporary Assistance Program (FITAP) assistance.
- Have a physical or mental disability.
Tips:
- If you do not live at home with your family, use your local living address.
- If you live on campus, use the campus address~ 906 East First Street, Thibodaux, La 70301
- Note~ your parents can not claim you on their SNAP benefits at their home address if you are applying at a separate address.
- If the student is provided more than 50 percent of their meals through a meal plan regardless if the meals are eaten or not, they are not eligible for participation in SNAP. Eleven or more meals per week is considered more than 50 percent of meals per week.
- People who use SNAP get an electronic benefits transfer (EBT) card to pay for their food. The EBT card is a debit card on which benefits are loaded each month.
- Remember to always keep your place of residency mailing address current for annual redetermination letters which will be mailed to the address you listed at the time of applying if not updated. Failure to do so will result in loss of benefits.
- 211 is an easy-to-remember telephone number that connects callers to information about critical health and human services available in their community. It’s a single access point for details about food pantries and other food assistance sources near you.
- Foodpantries.org is a directory for food banks, soup kitchens, and non-profit organizations committed to fighting hunger. Search by state to see what’s available near you.


WIC Louisiana
- Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) provides healthy foods, breastfeeding support, nutrition education and referrals to other social services to women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or postpartum. Infants and children up to their fifth birthday may also receive benefits.
Who is Eligible for WIC?
- Women who are pregnant
- Women who are breastfeeding
- Women who just had a baby
- Infants and children up to age 5

Call the clinic closest to you and make an appointment. Ask what you need to bring. They will most likely tell you to bring the following for each person applying:
- Identification
- Proof that you live in Louisiana
- Proof of income for everyone in your house with income
