Bio:

Currently an Assistant Professor of History at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana, Shae Smith Cox earned her Ph.D. in American History at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in May 2020 with a minor in Public History. She studies 19th century race and gender with an emphasis on material culture and memory of the U.S. Civil War and Reconstruction. Shae is working on her manuscript “The Fabric of Civil War Society: Uniforms, Badges, and Flags, 1859-1939,” which is under contract with LSU Press.

Accomplishments:

Dr. Shae Smith Cox wrote a chapter for publication entitled “Outfitting the Lost Cause: The Recreation of Memory, Identity, and Southern Sectionalism through Civil War Uniforms, 1865-1920s,” in Buying and Selling Civil War Memory in Gilded Age America, edited by James Marten and Caroline E. Janney, Georgia University Press, 2021.

Dr. Cox is part of the ECOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL RIDGE DYNAMICS IN THE
BARATARIA AND TERREBONNE BASINS grant project serving in the Human Dimension.
