Internships

DEPARTMENT MENU

The INTERNSHIP PROGRAM is designed to give students practical mass communication experience to accompany their classroom education.

In most cases, internships are taken during the summer between the student’s junior and senior years. The internship need not be an entire summer, although that is usually the best arrangement. Students receive credit in Mass Communication 390 for off-campus work and 388 for on-campus work.

Internships - Step-by-Step

  2. Take and pass the internship training exam [just stop by the MACO office during regular office hours]

  4. Adviser sends recommendation message to Departmental Internship Director confirming academic eligibility within 3 weeks before start of semester in which internship will be taken
  5. Choose a location. Students may choose a location from one of the local sites that have expressed interest in having interns [see below under Internship Locations heading] or the student my find their own site.
  6. Once an internship location is chosen, apply online at least 3 weeks before to the start of the semester in which the internship will be taken, to include:
    • Supervisor Letter: Supervisor writes letter (on company letterhead with a signature) to coordinating professor confirming the student has been accepted as an intern, specifying the details and the number of hours to be worked in the position.
      • The location site accepts responsibility for the student and student work on-premises.
      • For-profit internships for no pay MUST outline in the internship supervisor acceptance letter the duties of the intern that directly relate to the student’s degree concentration that meet the minimum 10 internship hours per week.

      • Background of company and why you chose it as your internship site.
      • What you can bring to this location.
      • Supervisor’s name, position and duties.
      • What qualifies this person as a supervisor.
    • Resume
  7. Department committee approves application based on academic eligibility, student prospectus and the supervisor letter.
