Both of the Louisiana Association of Teachers of Mathematics’ (LATM) Carol Meyer Scholarships for 2020 have been awarded and both are going to mathematics majors from Nicholls. These two students, Madison Liner and Amber Peltier, are highly involved in the Nicholls community and have an infectious energy toward mathematics and life. As student employees of the campus tutoring center, they have helped many Nicholls students succeed in their mathematics courses. Both students plan on continuing to help students after graduation by becoming mathematics teachers. The Department of Mathematics is proud to have Madison and Amber as members of our family and offer our congratulations on these well-deserved awards.
Here is what the LATM had to say about Madison and Amber.
Madison Liner: Madison is a President’s List Secondary Mathematics Education major at Nicholls State University. One of the comments found in a letter of support for her application states: “As current math club President, she is welcoming, organized and dedicated. In March we hosted almost 100 high school students to campus for a math competition and without her assistance, positive attitude, and organization it would not have gone nearly as smoothly.”
Amber Peltier: Amber has been recognized as one of Nicholls Colonels’ Leaders and Scholars. In her application of why she chose a major in mathematics or education Amber wrote: “I love mathematics, and I love to show others how to love mathematics. Mathematics is more than just memorizing problems. It exercises one’s brain and teaches one how to solve logical real life problems. I cannot wait to teach this to others and develop professionally in this journey.”
