The RN-BSN Articulation provides an opportunity for Registered Nurses (RNs) to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, and is designed to validate and award credit for existing knowledge, while remaining consistent with the objectives of the generic BSN Program. The BSN degree builds upon existing knowledge and skill sets expanding the nurses’ background in safe, evidence-based, patient-centered care; critical thinking skills; nursing informatics; interprofessional collaboration; quality improvement; and leadership and professionalism in the roles of provider, manager and member of the profession.
Recommendations by key stakeholders have magnified the importance of obtaining the BSN degree following initial licensure at the associate or diploma level. The American Nurses Association has issued a call for “BSN-in-10,” promoting an initiative that would require RNs to obtain the BSN within 10 years of initial licensure to continue practicing. The Institute of Medicine, in their report “The Future of Nursing: Focus on Education,” supports a more highly educated workforce to meet the increasing complexity of patient needs and health care systems. Additionally, multiple independent research studies have reported lower mortality rates, lower failure-to-rescue rates and better patient outcome rates when nursing care has been provided by nurses holding the baccalaureate degree.
Graduates of the RN to BSN articulation program are prepared to work across the spectrum of health care including hospitals, medical offices, community settings, and private industry. As well, the BSN prepares graduates to enter the next level of advanced practice education to expand their careers.
