Nicholls releases Jay Thomas

THIBODAUX – Nicholls State University officials announced today that head football coach Jay Thomas will be released from his duties effective Nov. 27. Thomas finished the 2009 season on a winning note as the Colonels defeated in-state rival Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday night in Hammond.

Thomas held an overall record of 26-36 as head coach and led the Colonels to the Southland Conference Championship in 2005. After earning a 21-21 record through his first four years, the Colonels have gone 5-15 over the last two seasons and have not had a winning season in conference play since 2005.

The Colonels’ only wins in the 2009 campaign came against Duquense (3-7), a winless Northwestern State (0-10) team and Southeastern Louisiana.

A search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
