Nicholls to honor veterans

THIBODAUX — Nicholls State University will commemorate Veterans Day with a public ceremony in the campus quadrangle at 11:40 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9.

Hosted by the Nicholls Veterans Organization, the event will feature guest speaker Lt. Col. Thomas Friloux of the Louisiana Army National Guard, who received a Purple Heart for injuries he suffered while serving in Baghdad. Several Nicholls student veterans will also take part in the patriotic program along with the Thibodaux High School JROTC, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity, and students from the Generations Teaching Generations program and MAX Charter School.

“We are proud to honor those brave men and women, young and old, who have served and sacrificed,” said Gilberto Burbante, Nicholls coordinator of veteran services and U.S. Marine Corps veteran. “We hope to see veterans, active military and community members come together as we celebrate this holiday in traditional Nicholls fashion.”

Earlier this fall, G.I. Jobs magazine named Nicholls a Military Friendly School for the fourth consecutive year. The university has made recruiting and retaining military students a priority as well as helping the veteran population adjust to college life. Currently, 195 veterans are enrolled at Nicholls.
