Nicholls to Offer Non-Credit Courses for Adults

THIBODAUX – The Office of Continuing Education at Nicholls State University is offering the following non-credit courses for adults during the month of October:

Computers

Microsoft Access XP: Level 1

In this beginner level class, students will learn how to create and use database objects including tables, queries, forms and reports. Prior knowledge of Access is not required, but participants should have an understanding of the basic concepts involved in working with a personal computer, such as skills that are learned in an introductory Windows course. The instructor will be Nolan Naquin.

Class meetings: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 2, 9 and 16

Microsoft Access XP: Level 2

In this intermediate level course, students will learn how to enhance their database designs by using the principles of normalization and their table relationships. Students also learn how to query multiple tables for data that is used in customized forms and reports. Additionally, students learn how to create data access pages to share data over an intranet or internet. Participants should have completed Microsoft Access XP: Level 1 and Introductory to Windows courses or have equivalent knowledge. The instructor will be Nolan Naquin.

Microsoft Excel: Level 1

This introductory level course will give students the skills to create, edit, format and print basic worksheets and charts in Excel. Prior knowledge of Excel is not a prerequisite, but participants should have an understanding of the basic concepts involved in working with a personal computer, such as skills that are learned in an introductory Windows course. This course is the first course in a series of courses. The instructor will be Brett Bourg.

Microsoft Excel: Level 2

This intermediate level course will expand upon the skills students learned in the Microsoft Excel: Level 1 course. This course provides students an opportunity to work with more advanced features of Excel, including templates, sorting, filtering, importing, exporting, advanced formulas, analysis tools and collaboration. Participants should have completed Microsoft Excel: Level 1 and an introductory Windows course or have equivalent knowledge. The instructor will be Brett Bourg.

Dance

Let’s Dance Beginners and seasoned veterans will enjoy the rhythms of the fox trot, swing and jitterbug, even a little waltz, rumba, tango and cha-cha. Partners are recommended. The instructor will be Angela Hammerli.

Finance

The Louisiana Retirement Workshop This workshop covers the issues facing Louisiana residents preparing to retire or in retirement. It includes a detailed discussion of retirement plan distribution options and choices that will determine standard of living during retirement years. Attendees will learn about estate planning in Louisiana and coordinating estate plans with retirement plans. This workshop is designed for Louisiana residents and covers Louisiana-specific laws and in-depth retirement issues. The instructor will be John E. Sirois.

Languages and Communication

Italian-Beginner

This course will promote and create interest, desire and passion in the Italian language and culture. Students will learn the Italian language along with the culture, customs, geography, history, lifestyles and culinary arts from the perspective of someone who lived in Italy for many years. The instructor will be Neal “Nino” Thibodaux.

Spanish-Beginner

This course will provide students with a basic knowledge of the Spanish language with an emphasis on the development of all four language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students will learn to use Spanish for communication in real, meaningful situations. Classroom time will be devoted entirely to practicing the skills of understanding and interacting in Spanish.

The instructor will be Julio Contreras.

Physical Enrichment

Pilates

Pilates is a unique method of conditioning that reshapes and redefines the body. Pilates exercises teach awareness of breath and alignment of the spine and strengthens the deep torso muscles important to help alleviate and prevent back pain. The program will focus on improving core muscle strength and overall flexibility. The instructor will be Rachal Pujol.

Special Interest

Entering the World of Autism

Taught by the mother of a child with autism and an autism advocate, the instructor combines professional and personal experience to educate the community on issues surrounding autism. Prospective students include parents/ caretakers, family members, educators, counselors and anyone else in a helping profession. The class is taught in a six-block module and will explore the in depth issues surrounding autism. The instructor will be Stacy Guidry.

Start Writing Your Novel

If you’ve ever considered writing a novel, this is your chance to get started. In the first class, you’ll learn the basics of creating a novel and actually start your own. You’ll bring your creation to the second class, where some will be shared. New material will help you add depth to your creation. The instructor will be June Shaw.

Cat and Dog Behavior Training

Remedy virtually any cat/dog behavior problem with the “Follow the Leader Method,” a fast humane approach to obedience. See noticeable results in just three days. A Potter’s Wheel

This course is an introduction to working on a potter’s wheel and hand-building. The students will be taught hand-building, throwing, glazing and firing methods including raku. All skill levels are welcome. Students must be at least 14 years old. The instructor will be Billy Bellanger.

Life and Health Insurance Pre-Licensing Course

This Louisiana State University video conferencing course offers the 32 hours of life and health class instruction suitable to prepare an individual to take the state insurance exam. The class material is designed to prepare the student for the exam and to provide a good education for a career in insurance. Topics include basic terminology, concepts, sales, the fundamentals of insurance law and the agent’s responsibilities.

Administrative Dental Assistant

This Gatlin Web-based online program teaches students the essential administrative tasks for managing the business aspects of a dental practice, including instruction in dental terminology and anatomy, medical-records management, accounts receivable and reimbursement management, insurance and patient billing, patient scheduling and procedural and diagnostic coding. The Administrative Dental Assistant program prepares students for a career working in a dental office.

Administrative Medical Specialist with Billing and Coding

The medical industry is experiencing a tremendous demand for individuals with knowledge of medical office operations, including billing and coding, processing insurance forms and using medical software. This Gatlin Web-based online program provides training on medical billing software as well as preparation for the Certified Coding Associate national certification exam.

Certified Bookkeeper

This Gatlin Web-based online course for experienced bookkeepers leads to national certification with the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers. Graphic Design

This Gatlin Web-based online program begins with the fundamentals of design and guides students through the terms and processes they will use to turn their knowledge of design into a career.
