Ceremonies Planned To Honor Veterans

THIBODAUX – Nicholls State University will honor local veterans through its Family Day football game at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, and Veterans Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12.

All veterans and those serving active duty are invited to attend the Nicholls vs. Texas State game with their families at no charge. Capital One Bank purchased 400 game tickets which will be distributed through local veterans groups. Veterans interested in attending can contact their veterans organization, call the Nicholls Athletic Department at (985) 448-4794 or call the Nicholls Office of Records and Registration at (985) 449-7133.

All veterans and those currently serving on active duty will be asked to stand for a moment of silence prior to the playing of the National Anthem.

Three current Nicholls students who were wounded in action and the families of three former students who were killed in action will also be recognized before kick off and presented with a commemorative coin, courtesy of the NCAA Wounded Warrior Project. This program allows local wounded warriors to participate in pre-game coin tosses and be honored at athletic competitions throughout the year.

The Veterans Day Ceremony in the Nicholls Quadrangle on Monday, Nov. 12, will include patriotic speeches and music. Hunt Downer Jr., assistant adjutant general of the Louisiana Army National Guard and secretary of the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs, will return to his alma mater as a guest speaker. Dr. Stephen Hulbert, university president will also address those in attendance.

Students from the Generations Teaching Generations preschool will lead the Pledge of Allegiance, and students from the Max Charter School will sing “You’re A Grand Old Flag.” The Thibodaux High School JROTC program will participate along with Nicholls students who will sing patriotic songs and perform “Taps.”

Cake and punch will be served after the ceremony. In case of inclement weather, activities will move to Talbot Hall.
