Adult non-credit classes abound at Nicholls

THIBODAUX – The Office of Continuing Education at Nicholls State University will offer the following non-credit courses for adults beginning in September:

COMPUTERS

Introduction to Windows XP: Level 1

This course provides a broad foundation for students so that they will have greater awareness and confidence using personal computers. Students will gain practical information and skills, including what a computer is, how to manage personal files and folders and how to use many of the programs that come with Windows XP. This class is taught by Brett Bourg.

Microsoft Access XP: Level 1

Participants should have completed Microsoft Excel Level 1 and an Introductory Windows course or have equivalent knowledge. This class is taught by Brett Bourg.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to start the PowerPoint program; identify on-screen features; navigate through a presentation; create and edit bullet slides; use PowerPoint drawing tools to create a slide; create and enhance an organizational chart; create and edit graphs; change the overall appearance of a presentation by using design templates and the Slide Master; run a slide show; become familiar with slide show options and add notes to a slide preview; save a PowerPoint presentation as a Web page; and open a locally stored presentation in Internet Explorer. This course is the first in a series of three Microsoft Word courses. It will provide students with the basic concepts required to produce common business documents as well as offer the opportunity to apply them. DANCE AND MUSIC

Beginner Middle Eastern Dance (Belly Dance)

Mehlika’s Mirage presents a beginners dance class that teaches the essence of the ancient art of belly dance. Belly dancing relieves emotional stress and tension in the body while empowering women to be comfortable with their bodies. Characterized by snake-like movements combined with sharp muscle isolations, this empowering style of dance develops strength and muscle tone while providing a fun, low impact workout. Classes feature yoga-inspired stretching and detailed instruction, but the main focus is enjoyment of the dance itself. Appropriate to all ages and body types, belly dance promotes balance in mind, body and spirit. Students are encouraged to wear comfortable dancing clothes, such as a long, full skirt or loose pants and a short top, leotard or choli. Ethnic jewelry, such as a coin belt or a scarf around the hips will help put students in the shimmy-dancing mood. This course is taught by Jessica Martin.

Intermediate Middle Eastern Dance Workshop (Belly Dance)
Mehlika’s Mirage presents an intermediate dance class that continues to teach the essence of the ancient art of belly dance. Classes will feature yoga-inspired stretching, abdominal floor work and detailed instruction. The main focus of the class, which includes tribal based choreography and group dances, is to prepare students for the advanced class. Dancers will also rehearse choreography previously learned in beginning level classes. Participants should wear a long, full skirt or loose pants and a short top, leotard or choli. Ethnic jewelry such as a coin belt or a scarf around the hips should be worn as well.
Directed by Jessica Martin and taught by Jana Hubbell, this class is open to anyone.

Instant Piano for Hopelessly Busy PeopleThis class, taught by David Haynes, M.Ed., is for people who want to learn the secrets and magical shortcuts professional piano players use to embellish songs. In just one evening, participants will learn all the chords needed to play any song in any style and key. This is a proven, fun, relaxed approach to professional style playing. Little or no experience is required, but those who cannot read notes are encouraged to send a self addressed, stamped envelope for a free pamphlet to Music Masters, 90 Molly Lane, Ringgold, Ga. 30736. Let’s Dance

Designed for beginners and seasoned veterans alike, this class allows participants to enjoy the rhythms of the fox trot, swing, jitterbug, waltz, rumba, tango and cha-cha. Partners are recommended. This course is taught by Angela Hammerli.

LANGUAGES AND COMMUNICATION

Public Speaking

Participants will learn about the communication process on a professional and personal level during meetings, social gatherings, news briefings and crisis situations. Topics include how to become a successful presenter whenever situations arise; how to sell oneself and one’s ideas by choosing the right words, phrases and closing statements; and how to organize thoughts and statements during an interview. Participants will also learn effective ways to communicate to the media, public and co-workers during a crisis – as well as appropriate times to use visual and vocal support. This course is taught by Craig Jaccuzzo.

Italian-Beginner

This course will promote and create interest, desire and passion in the Italian language and culture. The instructor, Neal “Nino” Thibodaux, will share 13 years of life experiences in Italy. Students will learn the Italian language along with the culture, customs, geography, history, lifestyles and culinary arts from an insider’s perspective.

American Sign Language

This course is an introduction to the basic production and comprehension of American Sign Language (ASL). The students will focus on the fundamentals of sign concepts, finger spelling, numbers, and non-manual markers and implement them using correct ASL grammar and sentence structure. Information regarding deaf history, deaf culture and current issues will also be presented and discussed. This course is taught by Alice Himel.

Cued Speech

This class, taught by Alice Himel, is designed for those interested in working with the deaf – or else those who are just looking for a new career. Cued speech is a sound-based visual communication system for use with and among the deaf. Developed almost 40 years ago, the technique supplements what is seen on the mouth in such a way as to make the spoken language visible. More and more parents are choosing this system for their deaf child, and there is a growing demand for trained personnel in this field. Students must be at least 13 years old.

Pilates

A unique method of conditioning that allows for body reshaping and redefinition, Pilates teaches awareness of breath and alignment of the spine, strengthening the deep torso muscles which help alleviate and prevent back pain. The program, taught by Rachal Pujol, will focus on improving core muscle strength and your overall flexibility.

Hatha Yoga is the most popular yoga in America today. With no religion base, this form of exercise uses posture and breathing techniques to link the mind and body. How to Start a Home-Based Medical Transcription Business

This class is designed for people interested in choosing their own work hours, running a home-based business, establishing a client base and making a profit. Students will learn what medical transcription is; how to distinguish between medical transcription and medical billing and coding; how to run the business simply and cost-effectively; and how to avoid expensive and common mistakes. An additional $20.00 for workbook will need to be paid to the instructor, Debra Burns, on the first night of class.

Dog Behavior Workshop – “Is my dog psychic or psychotic?”

Participants will unlock the mysteries of their dogs’ minds in this fun, interactive workshop. The class, taught by Martha Neil Anthony, will provide the tools necessary to better communicate with dogs and alleviate unwanted behavior. No dogs will be allowed in class.

Introduction to Canoeing

This course will cover basic canoeing; efficient, straight paddling; trimming the boat in wind; bracing; sculling; heeling and turning the boat; ferrying across currents; and avoiding dangerous situations. Participants must be able to swim. This course is taught by Leonard Naquin.

Ghost Hunting 101: A Scientific Approach to Paranormal Investigating

In this course, students will study a scientific approach to paranormal investigating, using high-tech equipment as well as skeptical and analytical methods of evidence analysis. Conducted by “Louisiana Spirits” Paranormal Investigators, the class is composed of three sessions: a classroom presentation; a hands-on investigation of a reportedly “haunted” location within one hour of Nicholls; and a final meeting to discuss the findings. Transportation to the investigation site is the responsibility of the student. This course is taught by Brad Duplechien.

Private Pilot Ground School

Students will learn about different types of flying, from light sport aircraft to multi engine commercial aircraft. Topics include basic aerodynamics, aircraft controls, power plants, avionics, weight and balance, radio communications, air traffic control procedures, airport procedures and more. This course is excellent preparation for the private pilot knowledge test – and since it is taught by a certified flight instructor and ground instructor, it can be entered into the pilots log as ground instruction. Included in the course fee is a private pilot ground school kit containing all the materials a beginning pilot will need, including all books, a circular slide ruler, plotter, logbook and flight bag. Additionally, students will be able to book introduction flights with the instructor at a special discount rate. This course is taught by Steven Stilts.

A Potter’s Wheel

Participants must be at least 18 and registered to vote in the parish in which they wish to apply for a commission to qualify to take the notarial examination.
