THIBODAUX – The Louisiana Board of Regents Educational Quality Support Fund recently provided $160,000 in matching funds to Nicholls State University to complete three endowed professorships and one first-generation endowed undergraduate scholarship. Private donations established the endowments, which now total $400,000.
“Nicholls State University is very fortunate to have supporters who strongly believe in and thoroughly understand the importance of this institution to the region it serves,” Dr. David Boudreaux, vice president for institutional advancement, said. “Their willingness to invest in our future bodes well for Nicholls as we strengthen our programs and continue to provide opportunities in higher education to the good people of the Bayou Region.”
The Henry Lafont Jr. and Kim Corales Lafont First Generation Endowed Undergraduate Scholarship will be awarded to graduates of South Lafourche High School who meet criteria established by the Louisiana Board of Regents. Each recipient must be a first-generation college student in his or her family.
Selected by the Nicholls Scholarship Committee, the awardees will receive $1,000 per academic year for a maximum of eight semesters, but the award amount may be increased as the endowment grows. The scholarship is limited to four recipients per year, including previous years’ awards.
The university’s new endowed professorships include the Donald Peltier Endowed Professorship in Education, the Goldring Family Foundation Endowed Professorship in Culinary Arts and the Grace Gueydan Endowed Professorship in Nursing. These titles will be awarded once the endowments meet the Board of Regents’ guidelines regarding accrued interest levels.
