Nicholls commencement slated for May 15

THIBODAUX – Nicholls State University will hold its spring commencement exercises Saturday, May 15, in Stopher Gymnasium, where more than 570 degrees are expected to be conferred in morning and afternoon ceremonies.

Graduates of the College of Arts and Sciences and College of Education will receive their diplomas at 10 a.m. Commencement for the College of Business Administration, College of Nursing and Allied Health and University College will begin at 2 p.m.

Dr. Carmelita P. Escalante, professor of medicine at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, will serve as keynote speaker. Escalante was named Outstanding Alumna of Nicholls in September 2009. A 1981 chemistry graduate, she earned her M.D. from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1985. She is a prolific researcher who has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals and books.

An honorary doctorate will be presented to Kerry Michael St. Pé, executive director of the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program – a nationally recognized effort dedicated to preserving and restoring the 4.2 million-acre area between the Mississippi and Atchafalaya Rivers in southeast Louisiana.

Dr. Eugene Dial, vice president for student affairs and enrollment services, will present the honors, and Dr. Carroll Falcon, provost and vice president for academic affairs, will present the candidates for the degrees. Dr. Stephen T. Hulbert, university president, will confer the degrees.
