Oil spill responders from Nicholls receive recognition

Lafourche Parish President Charlotte Randolph and Terrebonne Parish President Michel Claudet joined Nicholls State University President Dr. Stephen T. Hulbert and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Laynie Barrilleaux on Saturday, Oct. 23, to pay tribute to members of the Nicholls community who provided services in the aftermath of the gulf oil spill.

Nicholls faculty, staff and students – as well as members of the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program (BTNEP), based at Nicholls – received name recognition during halftime of the Nicholls vs. Central Arkansas football game. Post-disaster services performed by the honorees included research; transportation and cleanup of marine life; seafood safety monitoring; and expert recovery guidance. Many honorees remain engaged in long-term efforts to help restore Louisiana’s wetlands. Pictured from left are Barrilleaux; John Ringstad, David Walkley and Gerald Ford, BP community outreach team members for Lafourche Parish; Dr. Jim Baker, assistant professor of chemistry; Shelley Sparks, BTNEP media coordinator; Meredith McKoin, Nicholls student and BTNEP student worker; Alma Robichaux BTNEP education coordinator; Dr. Gary LaFleur, associate professor of biological sciences; Dr. Aaron Pierce, assistant professor of biological sciences; Dr. Allyse Ferrara, associate professor of biological sciences; Dr. Quenton Fontenot, associate professor of biological sciences and coordinator of the marine and environmental biology graduate program; Claudet; Randolph; and Hulbert.
