THIBODAUX – Alexander Moutouzkine, 2004 gold medal winner in the New Orleans International Piano Competition, will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 16, in Talbot Theater at Nicholls State University. Free and open to the public – and sponsored by the Nicholls Department of Music – the concert is part of Jubilee: A Festival of the Arts and Humanities at Nicholls.
Russian pianist Moutouzkine has received global critical acclaim for his stage appearances. His performance in London’s Wigmore Hall was described by International Piano magazine as “grandly organic, with many personal and pertinent insights, offering a thoughtful balance between rhetoric and fantasy.”
He first appeared on an American stage at 19, when he received the Special Award for Artistic Potential at the eleventh Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. A writer for The Dallas Morning News said he “played Brahms Op. ‘117 Intermezzi’ more beautifully, more movingly, than I’ve ever heard them. At once sad, tender and noble, this was playing of heart-stopping intimacy and elegance.”
