Howell named Executive Vice President at Nicholls

THIBODAUX – Larry Howell, interim executive vice president at Nicholls State University, has officially been selected as executive vice president, contingent upon the approval of the Board of Supervisors of the University of Louisiana System.

The official recommendation by Dr. Stephen T. Hulbert, university president, will be submitted to the board at its next meeting on Thursday, Dec. 8.

“Two very talented candidates reached the finalist stage for this position,” Hulbert said. “However, from direct experience, I found that Larry Howell carries the broad range of administrative experience necessary to take on this highly challenging new position within the university’s administration. Larry’s love for Nicholls, its people and programs is so very clear in all that he does.”

A native of Paris, Ill., Howell earned his bachelor’s degree from Nicholls in computer science, with minors in mathematics and business, before earning his master’s degree in applied mathematics from Clemson University. He began his teaching career at McNeese State University before returning to Nicholls to teach computer science. He has since served as director of institutional research, assistant vice president for academic affairs, interim vice president for academic affairs and associate provost. Howell holds the rank of associate professor of computer science.

In the community, he has served as a member of the Assumption Parish School Board since 1981 and a member of the governor’s task force for technology in K-12 schools since 1999. In past years, he also provided computer consultation services for private businesses, municipalities, hospitals and school systems.

Howell lives in Napoleonville with his wife, Tina. They are the parents of two grown children and have six grandchildren.

“I appreciate the opportunity to continue to serve this wonderful university in the capacity of executive vice president under the outstanding leadership of President Hulbert,” Howell said. “It is truly an honor to be in a position to help influence the future of Nicholls as it continues to grow and serve our students and the people of this wonderful region.”
