Nicholls launches several online degree programs

THIBODAUX — Starting this spring, Nicholls State University will offer seven completely online degrees through its new Nicholls Online division.

Designed to provide a more flexible alternative, particularly for individuals who have difficulty attending on-campus classes, Nicholls Online will provide remote access to the university’s nationally accredited degree programs and highly qualified instructors.

“Nicholls Online builds upon our existing structure — our credible academic programs and talented faculty — and shows that we’re progressing with the times and thinking outside of the box,” said Dr. Laynie Barrilleaux, vice president for academic affairs. “We’re hoping that Nicholls Online will help us reach a different student population, including the more than 3,000 adults in the area who started their degree but didn’t graduate.”

Online bachelor’s degree programs will be offered in English, general family and consumer sciences, general studies, history, nursing (for students who already have an unencumbered RN license) and sociology. A master’s degree in educational leadership with an educational technology concentration will also be available online.

Nicholls Online courses will be taught in eight-week sessions, beginning in January, March, May, July and October. Students who take three courses per session will be able to earn a bachelor’s degree in just three years. Although Nicholls will continue to offer online courses for its traditional students, Nicholls Online courses will be reserved for those in the online-only programs.

“In the early days of Nicholls, Gary Chouest, Hunt Downer, Chef John Folse and several other students drove a yellow school bus to transport people to campus who couldn’t otherwise get here,” said Dr. Stephen T. Hulbert, university president. “Nicholls Online is today’s yellow school bus. We’re meeting people where they are and providing them with access to a high-quality education.”
