Nicholls Campers Present Disney’s ‘High School Musical Jr.’

THIBODAUX — Nicholls State University will be rocking to the music of Disney’s “High School Musical Jr.” this weekend, when more than 40 Nicholls performing arts campers take the stage.

The public is encouraged to attend the family-friendly performances, which are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, June 28 and Saturday, June 29 and 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 30. The one-hour show will be performed in the Mary M. Danos Theater in Talbot Hall, and tickets can be purchased at the door for $10 each.

The story of “High School Musical Jr.” is a familiar one. Students at East High School are divided into cliques: jocks, thespians, brainiacs and skater dudes. When a new girl at school, a brainiac, realizes that she met the basketball team captain during winter break, everything begins to change.

The musical cast is made up of campers ranging in age from 7 to 16 and coming from more than a dozen different schools. During the four weeks of camp, they receive theater instruction and go through intense rehearsals. Almost half of this year’s campers are veterans of previous Nicholls summer performing arts camps.

“I’ve directed hundreds of kids since my first camp here in 2001,” says camp director Pat Hornsby Crochet, “and I marvel every year at how much the campers learn in such a short period. They are constantly amazing us with their talent and dedication.”

The performing arts camp is one of several summer programs conducted through the Nicholls Office of Continuing Education. For more information on the camp or the performance, visit www.nicholls.edu/continuing-ed
