THIBODAUX — Nicholls State University will host the Louisiana Region I Science Olympiad from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, March 15 on the university campus.
This all-day event tests scientific knowledge and skill, sending students through a series of 23 team events in the middle (grades 6-9) and high school (grades 9-12) divisions. As many as 270 students from across southeast Louisiana will compete in a variety of scientific fields, including genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology. Competitions test science vocabulary, allow students to build robots to send into battle and even use science to solve a crime.
Founded in 1983 by Gerard Putz and John Cairns, the Science Olympiad, which began as a small group of educators, has become a major national event. Students win a variety of prizes, including medals. Top winners of the Olympiad can advance to state and national level competitions and win college scholarships.
