THIBODAUX — Nicholls State University awarded the most degrees in its history during the 2013-14 academic year, handing out 1,365 diplomas to students.
This spring, the university awarded 672 degrees to students during its Saturday, May 18 commencement celebrations, just under the record 673 degrees handed out at last spring’s ceremonies.
Among the spring graduates were seven students who received the President’s Medal of Honor for earning a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Mi Chen, a chemistry major from Chongqing, China; Allison Gros, an accounting major from Thibodaux; Sarah Guidry, an education (Birth to Five Early Interventionist/Special Education) major from Cut Off; Jordan Hanberry, a biology (pre-med) major from Thibodaux; Brandon Naquin, an English major from Bourg; Benjamin Robichaux, a music major from Thibodaux; and Victoria Verdun, a psychology major from Thibodaux.
During the morning’s commencement exercises, Nicholls awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters to 1973 Nicholls alumnus Lawrence “Sonny” Albarado, city editor of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette newspaper in Little Rock, Arkansas. Albarado also delivered the keynote address at both ceremonies.

Academic honors are noted. Students graduating summa cum laude earned a cumulative GPA of 3.9 or higher, magna cum laude graduates earned a GPA of 3.7 to 3.899, and cum laude honorees earned a GPA of 3.5 to 3.699.
