Nicholls ranks among best online programs for upward financial mobility

THIBODAUX, La. — Nicholls State University is one of the best universities in the United States for helping students from low-income families improve their financial situation after graduating with an affordable online degree, according to a new report.

More than 2,250 schools were analyzed by SR Education Group and those with a mobility rate in the top 20 percentile that offer at least 10 online bachelor’s degree programs were considered. Schools are ranked by cost of attendance.

Nicholls is the ninth-most affordable with the 14th-highest mobility rate among the group.

“Our online programs are consistently ranked as some of the most valuable and affordable in the country,” said Dr. Andrew Simoncelli, director of Nicholls Online. “It is a great testament to our faculty and everyone else involved in proving effective services to our students. The Office of Distance Education tries to make sure that every student gets a good value out of their online education.”

Mobility rates, the percentage of students in the bottom 20 percent of income distribution who move to the top 20 percent after graduating, were provided by The Equal Opportunity Project. Nicholls 2.9 percent upward mobility rate ranks in the 85th percentile of U.S. colleges and is higher than the national average of 1.9 percent.

“Nicholls is always aiming to offer our students a high-quality education at low costs,” said Dr. Lynn Gillette, provost and vice president for academic affairs. “Our online programs are some of the most affordable in the country, while still maintaining the high standards that our students expect.”

Other schools on the list include California State University-Fullerton, Lamar University, Florida International University, University of Washington, Central Florida University, Northwestern State University, University of Texas-El Paso and the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.
