Renowned Latin American author to speak at Fletcher Lecture Series

THIBODAUX, La. — One of the most popular Latin American authors and professor at Tulane University will join the Nicholls campus as the guest speaker for the 2018 Fletcher Lecture Series on Thursday, Nov. 8.

Yuri Herrera, an award-winning author and Young Mellon Fellow at Tulane, will host a question-and-answer session at 11 a.m. in Ayo 152. He will discuss his works and themes in a lecture at 6 p.m. in the Gouaux Hall auditorium with a book signing afterward.

The talk is free and open to the public.

The 48-year old native of Actopan, Mexico, published his first novel, “Trabajos del Reino,” in 2003. The novel won the Premio Binacional del Novela | Border of Words and the Premio Otras Voces, Otros Ámbitos, which is awarded by a jury of 100 Spanish editors, journalists and cultural critics. His second novel, “Signs Preceding the End of the World, And Other Stories,” was published in 2015 and has been a critical success. His novels have been called an entrance “to the golden gate of Mexican literature.” He recently published a third book, “La Transmigración de Los Cuerpos.”

Herrera has taught literary theory, creative writing and Latin American literature at the Universidad Iberoamericana and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Sponsored by the Fletcher Lecture Committee, the Department of Languages & Literature and the Nicholls Student Programming Association, the Fletcher Lecture Series is in its 33rd year. Last year, fairy tale author Kate Bernheimer was the guest speaker. Other speakers have included NPR radio host Nick Spitzer; Benh Zeitlin, director of “Beasts of the Southern Wild;” Marilynne Robinson, author of Pulitzer Prize Award-winning novel, “Gilead;” and Samuel Pickering, English Professor at the University of Connecticut in Storrs and inspiration for Mr. Keating from the movie, ”Dead Poets Society.”
