Nicholls Jazz Band to perform recent works

THIBODAUX, La. — The Nicholls State University Department of Music invites you to an evening of modern of jazz at a concert held next month in the Mary and Al Danos Theater.

The Nicholls Jazz Band concert is set for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8. The Jazz Band will be performing newly composed and newly-arranged works from the last four years.

“This will be an exciting and fun concert for people to hear what the students have been working on this semester,” said Taylor Assad, instructor of music and Jazz Band director. “The songs we are playing are unexpected in terms of form and structure, and the concert will also feature many student soloists.”

The concert will feature arrangements composed by top modern jazz musicians including Matt Harris, Patty Darling, Greg Moody, Mike Carubia, Rob Vuono Jr. and Terry White.

Music instructor Dr. Matthew Swihart will also be featured on an arrangement of “Memories of You.”

The event is free and open to the public.

The Nicholls Jazz Band, which is made up of both music majors and non-music majors, gives each student their own unique part with different notes. The program encourages independence in reading music and enables students to improve in their sightreading. Students learn how to play various jazz styles, about important figures in jazz history and also how to improvise.
